The following is from the Introduction to Greensburg's Stars of Hope and tells the story of how this special community art project became a reality:

* * * * *

On May 4, 2007 an EF-5 tornado hit Greensburg, Kansas destroying 95% of the town and taking the lives of 13 people. The twister uprooted families, buildings, and the natural landscape of this beautiful rural town in South Central Kansas. Devoid of trees and natural color, the landscape of Greensburg was left barren and lifeless.

That was until the children of Greensburg, Kansas helped to restore a sense of color and hope back to their beloved community during the week before Christmas 2007.

With the help of The New York Says Thank You Foundation, 220 kids in Greensburg participated in a unique community art project to bring hope and inspiration back to their families, friends, and neighbors. The project was simply called "Greensburg's Stars of Hope." The children were aided in this project by two very special New York City firefighters who are volunteers with The New York Says Thank You Foundation. One of the firefighters survived 9/11. The other serves at Engine 10 directly across the street from Ground Zero. The New Yorkers were joined by James and Eva Vincent of Groesbeck, Texas whose home was destroyed in a deadly tornado in December 2006.

On the 9/11 Anniversary 2007, The New York Says Thank You Foundation helped to rebuild the Vincent's home. As their way to "Pay It Forward" the Vincent Family cut out by hand 220 stars for each one of the children in Greensburg and drove the stars nine hours from Groesbeck, Texas to Greensburg, Kansas to make this special community art project possible.

That's what America is all about.

We will never forget the love and laughter and brilliance of the children of Greensburg, Kansas who made this "Stars of Hope" project such a tremendous success. Proceeds from the sale of this book will go directly to support our 9/11 Anniversary 2008 rebuilding project in Greensburg.

May God continue to bless the children and community of Greensburg, Kansas.
